Meaning of the Redmond last name: from the Norman personal name Raymond. Redmond is the Irish form of the Norman name Raymond, from Germanic ragin, "counsel", and mund, "protection". The name arrived with the Anglo-Norman invasion of 1169 and became established in Wexford, where the Redmonds held land around the Hook peninsula from the Middle Ages. John Redmond, leader of the Irish Parliamentary Party before 1918, came from this Wexford family. The name is still most common in Wexford and Dublin. Their seat on the Hook was known as the Hall, or Redmond's Hall; they held it until the 17th century, and it was later rebuilt as Loftus Hall. Raymond le Gros, who landed at nearby Baginbun in 1170, was one of the leaders of the invasion. Spelling variants include Redmund and Redmon, and many Redmonds emigrated to England, the United States and Australia in the 19th century.
