Meaning and origin of the Schott last name

Meaning of the Schott last name: scot, or a travelling pedlar. Schott means "Scot". In medieval Germany the word was used for Scottish and Irish monks of the Schottenklöster in towns like Regensburg and Vienna, and later for Scottish pedlars, who travelled the German lands in such numbers that schotte came to mean a pedlar or small trader. The name is common in Hesse, the Palatinate and Bavaria. Otto Schott founded the glassworks at Jena in 1884. The Schottenklöster were Benedictine abbeys founded by Irish monks in the 11th and 12th centuries, at a time when Latin Scotus meant an Irishman. The Schottenstift in Vienna, founded in 1155, still keeps the name. Scottish traders were common in the Baltic and Prussia in the 16th and 17th centuries. Variant forms include Schotte and Schoth. Schott families emigrated to the United States in the 19th century, settling in Ohio, Illinois and Wisconsin.
