Meaning and origin of the Franco last name

Meaning of the Franco last name: free man, or Frank. Franco comes from the medieval personal name and adjective franco, "free, exempt", originally from the Franks, the Germanic people whose name came to mean "free man". It could describe a person free from feudal dues, or someone open and frank. In Italy it is common in Campania, Sicily and Piedmont, and the same name arose independently in Spain and Portugal. Italian emigrants carried Franco to Argentina and Brazil. In medieval Italy the word franco also described a city or market free from tolls, and some families may have taken the name from such places, such as Castelfranco or Villafranca. The plural Franchi and the diminutive Franchini are typical of the north and centre. Many Sephardic Jewish families also carried the name Franco, and it is found among Jewish communities of Livorno and the eastern Mediterranean. The name is also common in Venezuela and Uruguay.
