Meaning and origin of the Bruce last name

Meaning of the Bruce last name: from Brix in Normandy. Bruce comes from the Norman de Brus family, who took their name from their castle at Brix in the Cotentin peninsula of Normandy. Robert de Brus received the lordship of Annandale from David I of Scotland around 1124. His descendant Robert the Bruce won the Scottish crown and the victory at Bannockburn in 1314. The name spread across Scotland, especially in Fife and the North-East, and Bruces were early settlers in Ulster. The de Brus family held lands in Yorkshire, including Skelton in Cleveland, as well as in Scotland. After Robert the Bruce, the royal line passed to the Stewarts through his daughter Marjorie. The Bruces of Clackmannan and of Kinnaird were notable branches. The name is common in Orkney and Shetland as well as on the mainland. Bruce families emigrated to Canada, Australia and the United States.
