Origin of the O'Rourke name
O'Rourke comes from Ó Ruairc, "descendant of Ruarc", a personal name adopted from Old Norse Hrǿríkr. The O'Rourkes were kings of Breifne, the territory covering modern Leitrim and Cavan, and in the 12th century Tighearnán Ó Ruairc was one of the most powerful rulers in Ireland. After Breifne was divided, they held West Breifne, and the name is still most common in Leitrim.
