Origin of the McDermott name

McDermott comes from Mac Diarmada, "son of Diarmaid", a personal name of uncertain meaning, often explained as "free of envy". The MacDermots were lords of Moylurg in north County Roscommon, a branch of the same Síol Muireadhaigh stock as the O'Conor kings of Connacht. Their stronghold stood on an island in Lough Key, near Boyle. The name is still common in Roscommon, Sligo and across Connacht.
