Meaning and origin of the Joyce last name
Meaning of the Joyce last name: from the Breton personal name Iodoc. Joyce comes from the Breton personal name Iodoc, "lord", borne by the 7th-century hermit Saint Judoc. In England it became Josse and Joyce. A Welsh-Norman family of the name settled in Connacht in the 13th century, became thoroughly Irish, and gave their name to the Joyce Country, Dúiche Sheoigheach, in the mountains between Lough Mask and Killary. The writer James Joyce came from a Cork family that claimed descent from the Galway Joyces. Saint Judoc, a Breton prince who became a hermit in Ponthieu, gave his name to Saint-Josse-sur-Mer, and his cult was popular in medieval England and Flanders. In Connacht, the town of Galway also had a Joyce family among its fourteen merchant tribes. The name is now very common in Galway and Mayo, and in England. Joyce families emigrated widely to the United States and Australia.
