Meaning and origin of the Brambilla last name
Meaning of the Brambilla last name: from Brembilla near Bergamo. Brambilla is a name of origin, linked with Brembilla, a valley and village in the hills north-west of Bergamo, beside the Brembo river. Families from the valley moved to Milan and the lowlands of Lombardy in the Middle Ages. Brambilla is now one of the most characteristic surnames of Milan, Monza and Brianza, and it is one of the most frequent names in Lombardy, though rare elsewhere in Italy. The Val Brembilla is a side valley of the Val Brembana, an area of small farms, mills and forges. Many people from the Bergamo valleys moved to Milan to work as porters, carters and craftsmen. Brambilla is often used in Milanese speech and humour as a byword for the typical Milanese man, much like Smith in English. Brambilla families also emigrated to Argentina, Switzerland and France.
